The door was stiff, and warped from age, wear and neglect. I tried with all my might to shift it, but it would not budge, even though it had made a clicking sound when I turned the doorknob.
I stood back, and kicked at the door but this seemed to make the wood snag at the doorframe with an unspoken determination to remain out of bounds for me.
Fine. I would have to try the second door.
Up ahead, something stopped me in my tracks. There was a window at the northernmost point, adorned with a thick curtain netting behind a lavish drape of velvet.
In front of the window was something I believed to be a floor lamp of some kind. It was covered with some material, like chiffon from a wedding dress. But then, I could hear a voice emanating from the shape. And it was moving in my direction.
A girlâs voice asked me, âWhy are you here? You shouldnât be here.â
Jesus Christ. That was all the motivation I needed to get out of there.
I donât remember negotiating the stairs, but whether I jumped all seventeen steps or slid down the bannister or not, I hightailed it out of the building.
I looked up at the opposing window. The boy was there, laughing at me, the little bastard. He opened his window, and held the object I believed that was Rebeccaâs tooth in his hand, and prepared to drop it towards the undergrowth surrounding his house.
I wanted to scream âNoâ but nothing would come out from my mouth. Then, behind him, I saw It. Saw Her.
The same shape I had seen in the house just now. He was oblivious as she placed a hand on his neck, and using a knife with the other, slit his throat whilst his mouth was still open and laughing at me.
This time, I really did scream.
But the light had gone out from the window. The figure and the boy were gone, and with it, any hope of recovering Rebeccaâs tooth.
What the hell had my meddling unleashed?
